Tour of the Baltics Estonia 🇪🇪 Latvia 🇱🇻 Lithuania 🇱🇹

Updated: Nov 23, 2023

Recently we have been trying to plan our holidays in the most environmentally friendly manner so we planned a land trip to see some cute local spots in the Baltics. Due to a wedding, I left later than my friends so I didn't make it to Lithuania where they visited via bus. They said the public transport network was great and easy to manage.

We met up in Riga where they arrived by train from Kaunas. We spent a few days exploring Riga and then took the train to a cute town on the border of Latvia band Estonia called Valga or Valka depending on which side of the border you were on. The border had a huge swing where you could just swing from one country to the other. The town was small but adorable and we managed to accidentally land in a fantastic, super cheap, tasty restaurant called Lilli for lunch. I have to say, I love Baltic food/ restaurant culture. It's always much cheaper than in Finland so you won't pay yourself sick even if you wanted to order something out of the ordinary. They also cater well for vegetarians and vegans and have a great variety in general.

We continued on to an Estonian city called Tartu. Tartu has a large university so the city is big and vibrant (by Baltic standards). I thought it was also very beautiful, it stretches by a river and has a huge botanical garden. We continued eating well and enjoying the hot summer weather.

After a few days, we continued on to our last stop: Tallinn where we spent a day before boarding a ferry back to Finland.

This was the perfect cherry on the cake for my relaxing, Nordic/Baltic summer. While I worked remotely throughout, I got to have a very enjoyable summer with my friends. I always find it crazy when people think that the North is always cold and dark, it couldn't be further from the truth. What I love about the North is how we have the textbook perfect four seasons. Next more on how I enjoyed the autumn colours in September!

Best,

Mira
