When it comes to Christmas in the winter wonderland, a photo is truly worth a thousand words. It was a long-term dream come true to spend winter in Lapland and the reality did not disappoint.

We took the night cargo train to Rovaniemi where we unloaded our car and drove the final two hours. We had managed to rent a lovely cottage in Äkäslompolo, a village near the Ylläs ski resorts.

The lake was frozen and there were a bunch of people enjoying the views, skiing and playing around in the snow.

We also spent a fabulous day on top of Ylläs where the wind made the air feel like minus 30 degrees. However, as we Finns say, cold is only a matter of dressing and I felt like a real snowman rolling around. No photo could do justice to the views.

We stopped at the peak cafe for some hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. Would recommend!

We also managed to catch the northern lights on three nights! I was chasing them around with my camera. For this crazy activity, bring a thermos of tea, a seat cushion and some warm clothes. You'll also need a camera that can capture them if you want a photo.

It was unreal.

And with the northern lights, you could always also see the most beautiful starry skies.

There's no Lapland without some cute reindeer.

Finland is famous for its long dark winter and the white nights in the summer. In essence, in the northernmost part, the sun doesn't rise over the horizon for three months in the winter and doesn't set below it for three months in the summer. These natural phenomena make Lapland so magical and such an amazing destination throughout the year.
As we were leaving, we glimpsed the sun which was the perfect cherry on the cake.
Best,
Mira
