Antwerp

Good Monday everyone,
Like I have hyped before, the Netherlands and especially The Hague are brilliantly located. My friends and I had long talked about visiting Belgium, neither of them had ever been and I had only been to Brussels, so we planned a day trip to Antwerp! The fast train tickets were 30 euros a return and the journey took significantly less than two hours.
The train station itself is a gorgeous building and rather close to the city centre. We grabbed some coffees to go and strolled through the busy shopping streets to the main market square by the Cathedral of our Lady Antwerp. There were plenty of people outside enjoying the day. Behind the cathedral, there are many adorable alleyways filled with chocolate, beer and ice cream shops.
The famous guild style houses keep your eyes and camera busy through these alleys that lead towards the river and the Grote Markt (the big market square) where the Brabo fountain is located. There are many cosy restaurants around this area where you can taste the local foods and beers. By the river, Scheldt is another market area as well as the medieval Steen castle which is worth seeing at least from the outside if you don’t have enough time or interest to go in.

If you are a keen museum visitor, I would highly recommend the Museum aan de Stroom which is just a short walk farther down the Scheldt. There are multiple exhibitions on different floors and free access to the rooftop. As the museum is right by the water you can see beautiful ships, some wind turbines as well as the city. There is also a great sign by one of the restaurants that you should see from the top!
Antwerp is the ideal city for a day trip: small enough to be walked around and filled with restaurants and cafes and bars that you should explore. Don’t forget to taste the local cherry beer, famous French fries (pomme frites) and the delicious Belgium waffles. Stroll around the city centre’s hidden alleyways and enjoy the architecture.
Love,
Mira
