Weekend in Observatory

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend. In Cape Town, it was very hot and dry but filled with laughter.

We took the train from Stellenbosch to Cape Town on Friday morning. Everyone had always warned me about taking the train in here as it might be rather dangerous but my friends had done it before so we decided to do it. It went very smoothly; I would just recommend not to go alone and only go during the rush hours. It is true that the train is actually only used by the locals but it is very useful for everyone. Uber being around ZAR 400 to Cape Town, a ZAR 19 train ticket is a very lovely change for students. Just check the route and the stops before you hop on as the station names are not always very noticeably displayed.

We arrived at our lovely little place in Observatory and I met up with an old family friend while everyone else got ready. The main street in Observatory is sided with cute cafes and restaurants and is filled with people day in and out. We had actually looked into staying in central CT before but somehow never considered Obs! But it seems like I might be permanently staying with that family friend.

One of the main reasons for going to CT at this specific weekend was the fact that all museums are half-priced during the first Friday of the month. I also believe that many of the art galleries have similar offers! Our target was the famous Zeitz Museum at Waterfront. I didn’t know what to expect as the others elected the place but couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised. I would very much recommend checking it out!

We headed back to Obs for the night out and did a bit of a bar hop. We ended up at the famous Stones for most of the evening. It is a big pool hall with cheap drinks and funky artwork on the walls.

Sadly, there is a stomach flu going around in Cape Town and two of my friends were feeling quite ill so we didn’t plan a very hectic Saturday; chilled around in Obs and got to know the area, then moved onto the Rhodes Memorial Dam to enjoy the sun. While there, the most bizarre thing happened; two firefighting helicopters came to pick up water from the Dam just a few meters in front of us. We didn’t hear of a fire so I am hoping that there wasn’t an emergency anywhere.

In the evening, we went to a friend’s house on the central hills overlooking the whole of the city centre and walked down from there to experience the vibe of Long Street. The night out was super fun!

I really enjoyed being in central and am looking forward to staying there a bit more! One of the absolute must-dos is hiking up Lion’s Head to see the sunrise.

Until next time,

Mira
