Social distancing in Finland

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

Hello there,

It's been a while since travel has been scarce but I would love to take this opportunity to show my wonderful homeland and explain why it has been brilliant being here for the unfortunate but necessary corona quarantine.

Finns are often described as socially distant in general, however, I feel like we have been going just as cabin crazy as everyone else. Though it has been lovely to have so much empty wilderness right at my backyard and so few people to steal into my serenity.

Many Finns have taken advantage of remote work and access to nature, all the natural parks are full of people but luckily we are quite rural so it's easy to find a corner without other people in it. I've been very happy to notice how people have become increasingly interested in outside sports and activities. Not a day goes by without someone playing golf in the field near my house. I hope people keep appreciating nature once this is over too.

My friends and I have been busy camping and hiking. We are old girl scouts and it has been amazing to return back to our roots and refresh our memories. There are so many beautiful lakes to hike around and I have been upgrading my camping gear.

There are also some beautiful towns and small cities near the capital where you can spend the day having coffee outside and eating ice cream. For example, Porvoo where I visited with my mum on mothers' day. Porvoo has adorable old wooden houses and a wonderful riverside for a stroll.

We finished our Porvoo day by visiting the cherry flower garden in Helsinki. While the flowers were beautiful, the park was packed with people on a picnic completely ignoring all social distancing which just makes me wonder about the summer and how we will manage to keep our distance when the sun comes out.

I have explored plenty of nature with my adorable puppy and have also started trail running which has been a fabulous recharge and a change. This week, I'm heading for a two-week road trip around Finland, I'm superbly excited! I shall blog about that thoroughly. We will visit, for example, Porvoo, Lappeenranta, Saimaa, Koli, Nurmes, Hossa, Saariselkä and Lemmenjoki. Stay tuned.

I wish you all a brilliant, relaxing summer. Let's keep each other safe.

Best wishes,

Mira
