Hermanus: the whale watching paradise

Greetings from Hermanus,

Hermanus has been a major destination on my bucket list. I have been there several times before but never during the whale migration season. The whale season starts in August and ends at the end of September. If you are ever in South Africa during that time, you must go.

Hermanus is 120 km away from Cape Town on the South Eastern coast of South Africa. The town is right by the ocean and is the most known for the whales. The beach strip offers hiking and strolling opportunities, cute restaurants and fantastic views over the water. You can rent out kayaks or book yourself on a boat cruise.

During the whale migration season, you will be able to see tens of whale near the rocks. Especially during dusk, the whales start playing around and jumping out of the water. We drove to Hermanus through Betty’s Bay (a famous penguin beach) and spotted our first whale there. I got so excited and was almost set after having seen just one. As we started our evening stroll around the coast in Hermanus, more and more were visible. I honestly did not know what to expect and wasn’t sure if we would get lucky enough to see any close-by but as we sat at the cliffs, more the thirty whales were jumping from the water and expelling water from their blowholes.

The restaurants by the beach cater for all but especially for seafood fanatics.

The next morning, the whales were a little quiet by we got a chance to have a picnic surrounded by seals and dassies which was just as good. The ocean does bring some cold chills but the sky and ocean were bright blue throughout the weekend.

We stopped by a fresh fish market on our way home and drove back to town through the scenic mountain pass road and over St Lowery’s Pass.

Best wishes,

Mira
